A virtual MFA device is a mobile application that generates security codes for account authentication. It runs on mobile devices (such as smartphones) and generates a six-digit verification code based on the TOTP (RFC 6238, Time-Based One-Time Password Algorithm) standard.

Security considerations

Since these applications operate on standard mobile devices that may lack robust security protections, virtual MFA might not provide the same level of security as hardware MFA devices. For highly sensitive accounts, consider using a dedicated hardware alternative.
