Common Fraud Indicators
False Information — Watch for likely false information such as fake phone numbers and email addresses. Inconsistent Customer Details — Inconsistencies across purchases, such as using the same email with different names, raise red flags. Suspicious Communication — Scripted or formulaic messages, especially canned responses sent to multiple sellers, warrant verification. Unusual Order Patterns — Large orders, multiple identical items, or purchases of only high-value merchandise may indicate fraud. Payment Red Flags:- Same card with different shipping addresses
- Multiple cards using identical shipping addresses
- Rapid declined payments with varying cards
- Requests to split large orders across different cards
Shipping Physical Goods
Verify that shipping and billing addresses align. Watch for customers who ask to change the shipping address after the order is placed. Review the card’s country of origin against stated addresses, and avoid customers’ preferred shippers. Consider 24-48 hour delays for high-value or unverified orders.Digital Goods/Services
Monitor for multiple rapid charges, spam abuse, or sudden account activity changes. Require CVC and postal code verification.Card Testing Prevention
Monitor your declined payments. Many of them that used different cards in rapid succession indicate a fraudster is testing stolen card numbers. Implement delays or CAPTCHAs to discourage this activity.Best Practices
- Require clear terms of service.
- Display complete policies.
- Track all shipments.
- Use transparent billing descriptors.
- Maintain separate business accounts.
- Consider proactively refunding confirmed fraudulent payments to avoid disputes.
